If you've been curious about CrossFit but not sure what walking into a box actually looks like — this is the honest version.

CrossFit Ancoats has been part of Manchester's fitness scene for almost a decade. It started long before the gym itself existed — as a free outdoor Sunday boot camp run by Ben and Susie in the community. A lot of those original faces still train with us today. The gym opened in 2019 (yes, four minutes from Piccadilly — we know, the timing was interesting) and has grown into Manchester city centre's biggest CrossFit community, around 5,000 square feet and 155 active members.

So — what do you actually get when you walk through the door?

A community, not a competition

The CrossFit world has a reputation for intensity, and fair enough — the sport can look pretty extreme on a screen. But our focus has always been on health and longevity first. We closely follow CrossFit the methodology, not CrossFit the sport. That distinction matters. It means you're building genuine fitness — strength, conditioning, mobility, the stuff that adds quality to your life for decades — not chasing a leaderboard.

The culture here is simple: move well before you move fast or heavy. High-fives are mandatory after workouts. Nobody finishes until everyone finishes. It sounds like a cliché until you've experienced it — then it just feels like the right way to train.

Programming built around you actually getting better

Ben has a degree in Sport and Exercise Science, and a varied sports background, which shapes how the programming is structured. The year is broken into macro cycles with clear goals — building strength, developing skill, conditioning, and peaking — rather than just throwing random hard workouts at a wall and seeing what sticks.

  • Lift & Breathe — functional, accessible, no Olympic lifting or complex gymnastics. You can get a brilliant workout and leave sweaty without needing to know what a snatch is.

  • CrossFit (RX) — the core offering. This is where you'll build and develop skills over time. It's challenging and it's meant to be.

  • Compete — for those who want to take the sport seriously and compete on a quarterly or annual basis.

Not everybody wants competition. That's absolutely fine — most of our members aren't competitive athletes. They're professionals, parents, runners, people who tried a gym and got bored, people who've never really trained before. They all coexist in the same session and push each other along.

It actually works for everyone

The CrossFit methodology is one of the few approaches to fitness I've seen genuinely work for a grandmother and a semi-professional rugby player in the same room. Every workout is scaled or modified to meet you at your current level. No one gets left behind, but nobody gets let off easy either. Our coaches will push you to exactly the level you're capable of — and help you figure out what that level is.

The most consistent piece of feedback we get from new members is that they felt welcome from the moment they walked in. It's almost like having a personal trainer in a group setting — the coaching is individual even in a full class, and it costs a fraction of one-to-one PT.

What happens when you join

New members can start with a 7-day trial for £30. That gets you access to classes across the full timetable — Monday to Friday with sessions from 6am through to 7:30pm, plus Saturday team conditioning and Sunday options including Olympic Lifting and our Sunday Roast 90-minute endurance session. Others chose to start with our Foundations course, three stuctured sessions that will teach you the basics of functional movement in a small group with a coach.

You'll get coached properly from session one. There's no thrown-in-the-deep-end moment. The coaches guide you through every workout, help you scale appropriately, and make sure you leave feeling like you actually achieved something — not just beaten up.

Beyond the training

Regular socials — drinks, food, hikes, general community stuff — are a big part of why people keep coming back. Training together is one thing; actually liking the people you train with is another.

We've built something genuinely good here over ten years, and it shows.

Want to give it a go?

Start with the 7-day trial for £30. You'll train with real coaches, in a real community, doing something that actually makes a difference. We're four minutes from Manchester Piccadilly at 102 North Western Street, Ancoats.
