Is CrossFit Right for Me? One Member's Honest Answer.

Daniel joined CrossFit with no gym background, no real fitness history, and no idea what he was getting into. Seven years later, he's still at it. We asked him a few questions. He answered them exactly as we'd expect.

A note before we start

We get some version of the same question almost every week: is CrossFit right for me? Usually it comes from someone who's curious but cautious. Someone who's tried other things, or hasn't tried anything in a while, and isn't sure whether CrossFit is really built for people like them.

The honest answer is that we could tell you all day that CrossFit Ancoats is for everyone, and we'd mean it. But it lands differently coming from Daniel. So we'll let him do most of the talking.

How it started

I bought a house right across from a CrossFit gym in Newcastle, Australia. Every early morning I'd wake up to dropped weights and blasting music. I figured I could either join them or - well, you know. Turns out only one of those was actually an option, because they were all faster, stronger, and fitter than me.”

That's how it started. Not a fitness epiphany. Not a life-changing decision. Just a man, a poorly timed house purchase, and no real alternative.

"If I had checked out the house one early morning, I would never have bought it."

Walking in for the first time

Was he nervous? Absolutely.

I felt like a slow hippo among strong monkeys in Planet of the Apes.”

It's one of the most accurate descriptions of walking into a CrossFit gym for the first time that we've ever heard. That mix of intimidation, imposter syndrome, and the very real sense that everyone else knows exactly what they're doing and you absolutely do not.

The thing is - they don't. Nobody does on day one. And the people who look like they do have just had more ‘day ones’ than you.

"Still feel like a hippo. But the monkeys are now my friends."

Seven years in — what keeps him coming back?

Community and coaches. I'm too lazy and ill-disciplined to exercise alone and I need someone to tell me what to do.”

There's more honesty in that sentence than most fitness content manages in a thousand words. Daniel isn't coming to the gym because he's discovered a deep love of exercise. He's coming because the structure works for him, the coaches keep him accountable, and the community makes the whole thing considerably more bearable than doing it alone.

That's not a weakness. That's just how most people actually work, and it's exactly why a coached, community-based environment like CrossFit tends to produce better long-term results than a solo gym membership.

What he'd tell someone on the fence

We asked Daniel what he'd say to someone who was nervous about starting. His answer has two parts, depending on when you ask him.

After a workout: “run and don't come back.”

Before a workout: “it's fantastic. People are friendly and all the exercises are scalable, so you do everything from day one. And no one has ever laughed at my failed attempts. I have always experienced support.”

The first answer is a joke. The second one is the truth. Nobody is watching you struggle and thinking less of you. They're either focused on their own workout or they're quietly rooting for you, because they remember exactly what day one felt like.

On the biggest CrossFit myths

That it's a cult, or that you get injured. The first one is a little bit true, it is a bit cultish, but in the most friendly and supportive way. And you're allowed to leave."

On the injury myth: “just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Any injuries I've had since I started CrossFit, I got from doing some other exercise - not CrossFit.”

This is something we hear a lot and it's worth addressing clearly. CrossFit has a reputation for injury that isn't supported by the experience of people who train consistently with good coaching. The movements are taught progressively, scaled to your ability, and coached in every single session. That's a safer environment than most people's unsupervised gym routines.

The thing that actually makes it work

While I'm not talkative myself in the mornings, I like the vibe. Having a friendly bunch around you makes it so much easier to exercise.”

You don't have to be the most sociable person in the room to feel the benefit of training with other people. The energy in a room full of people working hard is different to training alone. Daniel felt it on day one and he still feels it seven years later.

So, is CrossFit right for you?

If you're asking the question, you're probably more ready than you think.

Daniel started with no real gym experience, no fitness base, and no particular enthusiasm for early mornings. He just needed somewhere to go, someone to tell him what to do, and a community that would make showing up feel worth it.

Seven years later he's here. Still showing up. Still, by his own admission, feeling a bit like a hippo.

The monkeys are his friends now though.
