"I'm Not Fit Enough for CrossFit" - Let's Kill That Myth

The idea that you need to be fit before you can start getting fit genuinely baffles me.

It's like wanting to be able to play the piano before you've had a single lesson. Or the Karate Kid already knowing karate before turning up at Mr Miyagi's. The whole point of starting is that you don't know yet. That's what we're here for.

"I'm not fit enough for CrossFit" is the most common thing I hear from people who are curious but hesitant. So let's go through it - properly - and work out where that idea comes from and why it isn't true.

Where the myth comes from

If you first heard about CrossFit through social media or YouTube, there's a decent chance what you saw was the CrossFit Games - elite athletes doing extraordinary things at extraordinary speed. That's the sport of CrossFit. It's the Olympics of the methodology. It is not representative of what happens in a CrossFit gym on a Tuesday morning.

What we do is training. Competition is completely optional, entirely individual, and something the vast majority of our members never pursue. The Games athletes are to CrossFit what Premier League footballers are to a five-a-side kickabout, related, but not the same thing.

Yes, it's hard work. That's the point.

There's no way around it - progress takes effort and a level of discomfort. But hard doesn't mean too hard. There's a significant difference between the two.

I'd far rather see someone train three days a week at a moderate, consistent effort than show up once a week and max out. In fact, I actively encourage people to leave the gym feeling like they could have done a little more. That's the sustainable version. That's how you build a habit that lasts.

Discomfort isn't a warning sign. It's the signal that something is working.

Starting something new is uncomfortable - that's normal

Beyond the physical effort, there's the discomfort of being new. Not knowing anyone. Not knowing where anything is. Feeling like everyone else knows exactly what they're doing.

Here's what actually happens. Your coach knows you're coming. They'll meet you at the door, introduce you to a few members, and walk you through everything. Those members will very quickly become people you genuinely look forward to seeing. And within a week or two, someone else will have joined who's even newer than you - and you'll be the one helping them settle in.

The room moves fast when you're in it. The nerves don't last.

You won't be the best in the room - and that's fine

Yes - if you're brand new, there will probably be people in the class who are further along than you. That's true of every gym, every sport, every skill in the world. It's not a reason not to start.

What's different here is that nobody cares which version of the workout you're doing. The culture at CrossFit Ancoats is built around supporting each other - not sizing each other up. The person who's been training here for three years is cheering for the person on their first session just as loudly.

The Foundations course - removing every excuse not to start

For anyone who's completely new to the gym, we run a Foundations course before your first group class. Three sessions - small group or one-to-one, covering the fundamental movements: the squat and its variations in session one, pressing variations in session two, and different versions of the deadlift in session three.

By the time you've done those three sessions, you know what to expect. You know the movements. You know at least one of the coaches. And we'll book your first group class before you leave - with that same coach teaching it. The whole thing is designed to remove the uncertainty and build confidence before you're ever in a room full of people.

It's like having a PT every time you walk in

Think about what you'd achieve if you could afford a personal trainer every single session. The confidence. The progress. The absence of standing around wondering what to do next.

That's essentially what every CrossFit class is. A qualified coach in the room for every session, there to help you move better, scale movements to your level, and track your progress over time. At a fraction of the cost of one-to-one PT - which for three sessions a week would run to around £600 a month before you've even paid for a gym membership.

Scaling - what it means and why it matters

Every single session, movements are scaled and modified to suit each person in the room. Lighter weights, alternative exercises, reduced reps, different movement patterns - whatever is needed to make the workout both effective and appropriate for where you are that day.

And "where you are that day" matters. You might be physically tired. Mentally drained. Emotionally flat. We understand that, and we work with it. The goal is always to get the best out of what you have on a given day - not to grind you into the floor regardless.

The membership is designed for this

Our Momentum membership is 13 classes a month - three sessions a week with a little flexibility. That's the right starting point. Enough to build a habit and see real progress, without overwhelming yourself before you've found your feet. You're resting more days than you're training. That's intentional.

When you're ready to do more, the Performance membership is there. But there's no rush, and no pressure.

What's the alternative?

Here's the honest version of the other options:

A personal trainer costs around £50 per session. Three sessions a week is roughly £600 a month - on top of a gym membership you'd still need to pay for. Most people can't sustain that.

An online programme is only as good as the consistency of the person following it. Without a coach in the room, most people don't. Not because they're lazy - because accountability matters, and accountability is something a PDF can't provide.

Running is great. But running in Manchester weather, alone, only works your cardiovascular fitness - your strength isn't being developed, and without structure it's easy to plateau quickly.

The structure, the coaching, the community, the scaling - CrossFit Ancoats provides all of it, in one place, for less than half the cost of going it alone with a PT.

What our members say

Don't take my word for it.

Joining CFA has completely redefined my daily routine. I went from being intimidated by the gym and daunting workouts to genuinely craving the challenge every single day. That shift is a testament to the incredible coaches and the supportive environment they've built. I've hit all my PRs here, and celebrating those wins with such an awesome group of people has made this place truly special to me."

"I've been at CrossFit Ancoats for just over a month and I couldn't recommend it more. After doing BodyPump for a year without much guidance on technique, I'm amazed by how much my lifting technique has improved in such a short time. Sam, Susie and Ben are fantastic coaches. They explain movements clearly, provide individual feedback, and adapt exercises so they're suitable for both beginners and more experienced members. The atmosphere is so welcoming and everyone is incredibly supportive. It's a great place to train."
